ESTONIAN ACADEMY OF ARTS MASTER THESIS 2016

WOVEN TEXTILE COLLECTION VISUALISING BRAINWAVES INSPIRED BY PERIODIC PHENOMENON OF FREQUENCY

This thesis investigated the use of the frequency as an inspirational concept for the process of textile design. The aim of the study was to develop a visualisation method that can be applied to the technology of weaving. The final designs are based on Delta, Theta, Alpha and Beta wave cycles represented by human brain activity.

The wave cycles are not only visualised, but also seen in relation to how that particular brainwave band corresponds to personal subjective states. By virtue of this, the nature of the final woven designs was expressed by repeating waves that varied from smooth to rapid.

In this project, the auditory illusion of binaural beat was chosen to supplement the concept of frequency. Each brainwave band is associated with certain subjective states, and through the process of hearing binaural beats, combined with the process of entrainment, these states can be altered.

Partition panel WAITING ROOM for Young Creations Award: Upcycling 2015 competition at Heimtextil, Frankfurt Germany

Current project is using cotton as post-consumer waste – to be precise, it is made out of used cotton towels. Material used in the project is made as a donation by the non-profit organization named Re-use Centre.

The use of the textile is seen in the public waiting rooms to soften the acoustics of the space. Because the textile is approximately 8 cm thick they can be placed on the walls or used as panels. Transferable modular panels give a possibility to structure the space or create more private space.

The inspiration of this textile is to see and to feel the sound. The surface of the textile gives forward the concentrated image, what is the texture of hundreds of people talking in the space.

The texture of the textile is directly based on a pattern line, what is a thousand times magnification of the sound frequency recorded in a public waiting room.

MOLD textile collection for Heimtextil 2015, Frankfurt Germany / tutored by Dots. Krista Leesi / synthetic textiles  / handmade sublimation print

In our interiors the mold is seen as unwanted phenomenon. But when looking closer it might turn out to be unexpectedly beautiful and inspiring.  The idea and purpose of current interior textile collection is to bring this controversial idea safely to the interior design.

Created pattern is seen used as a print for example on wallpaper or (shower) curtain.
